Harrison (Philadelphia) Elementary School ‘84; Central (Philadelphia) High School ‘87; Poppa Bear Runners 

Reed first competed at the Relays in 1979 while in third grade. While at Central High School, he was the keystone of teams which three times finished second in championship relays. As a high school sophomore in 1986, Reed ran 45.10, the Carnival’s fastest high school 400-meter leg to that time.
