A rare three-time record setter in a single event, McCluskey was the winner of the Penn Relays collegiate steeplechase in every one of his varsity years. On each occasion, he set a new meet record, with the first two races also establishing national collegiate records at 9:37.0 in 1931 and 9:28.6 in 1932, the year he became an Olympic bronze medalist.
