Great Bridge (Chesapeake, Va) HS 1992, Tennessee 1996

As a Great Bridge senior, Johnson won the high school pole vault at 15-9 in 1992. Four years later, he won the college vault with a still-standing Relays record of 19-0. But this remarkable effort was only the crowning achievement of his day, as he set a pair of meet records earlier in the competition, being the only person to clear 18-1½ and 18-6 on his way to his final and lasting record. He was the overwhelming choice as College Male Individual Event Performer that year.
