Army (West Point) 1952
Shea ran three times at the Relays, winning the two-mile run on each occasion. As a junior in 1951, he set a Carnival record of 9:11.9, breaking a ten-year old record. Out to better that mark as a senior in 1952, he was foiled by horrible rains and a sloppy track, but his 9:11.9 mark stayed on the books until it was broken in 1956. Shea’s senior year would be his last on the track, as he served in Korea where he was killed in action, earning the Congressional Medal of Honor.
