Four times a watch winner while in college, Bantum won a pair of shot put titles in 1956 and ‘57. His first championship was won at 59' 1 ¾", a meet record which lasted six years. His second win came as half of a shot/discus double win, with marks of 54' 8" and 155-' 2 ½", respectively. As a sophomore in 1955, Bantum also ran a leg on the winning shuttle hurdles team.
