A winner of the collegiate hammer throw in 1997 with a meet record, Ellerbe went on to greater fame as an Olympic Development thrower, winning three times in succession. In the last two years, 2000 and 2001,  she set American records in the hammer, reaching 231' 2" (70.46m) and 231' 8" (70.62m), with the latter mark standing as a Relays record until 2003.
